Abstract / Description:Sensors of chemical variables (O₂ , H₂ concentrations, etc.) and of densities and flow rates of chemicals, play a vital part in the process industries. The article describes the recent developments in instrumentation amde possible by microelectronics and information technology, with particular discussion of information flow in a sensor systems and the demands made upon sensors. Recent developments in the field are considered, with brief descriptions of: a miniature gas chromatograph; a magnetic-inductive flow meter; a correlation flow meter; a MOSFET H₂ sensor; and fibre-optic pH and level sensors.
