Abstract / Description:The GERDA experiment searches for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 76Ge. A major reduction of
background is envisaged by operating almost bare germanium diodes in ultrapure liquid nitrogen or liquid
argon. The purity of the cryogenic liquid in terms of 222Rn is crucial for the success of the experiment. In
this work techniques for measuring 222Rn in nitrogen and argon at the μBq/m3 level are presented. It is
shown that the required purity can be obtained for both gases, nitrogen and argon.
