Abstract / Description:The 17m diameter MAGIC telescope will start to become operational in mid-2003. While during the commissioning phase known AGN sources will be observed tocalibrate the instrument, for the subsequent first phase of observations AGNsfrom the Costamante-Ghisellini sources, from the third EGRET catalogue andselected other objects of interest will be observed. The selection of suitable AGNs is based on observability, spectra, and cutoff energies. Objects in therange of z=0.1 to 0.6 will also be included. The selection is done by takinginto account the measured differential fluxes and their extrapolation up to the MAGIC energy window. In a first stage, a naive power-law extrapolation of the EGRET spectral points is applied. In a second stage, the absorption in a modelof the intergalactic infrared background has been estimated and severalintrinsic spectral breaks between 5 and 500 GeV have been considered. This study results in a list of sources and observation times needed to detect thesources with 5 sigma significance for different intrinsic spectral breaks, based on the SSC gamma emission model.
