Abstract / Description:Streaming of the magnetized plasma produced in the stationary plasma generator PSI-2 has been investigated by means of a Mach probe. We noticed that the streaming can be strongly influenced by changing the magnetic configuration in this region. The Mach numbers measured, however, are in the range of 0.05–0.2 only, i.e. far below supersonic flow. There are some analogies to the flow of a gas in a Laval nozzle. However, in the magnetized plasma, the Bohm criterion at the neutralizer plate should impose a special boundary condition and force a transition to supersonic flow at the region of maximum magnetic field strength. The experimental results (M << 1) appear therefore to be in disagreement with Bohm's criterion, but further measurements — immediately in front of the neutralize plate — are required to exclude the influence of ionization in the considered region.
